Title

A study on the implementation of ICT for teaching and learning in the English modules for Higher Diploma students

Research Question

What technology is available in the English modules?
What are the effect of the implementation of the use if ICT.

Participants

Higher Diploma students taking the English module
Teachers

Why is this important topic to study

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is increasing dramatically in teaching and learning. It makes great influence on the teaching pedagogy.

The development of Information and Communication Technology is linked to the course planning, assessment scheme and delivery of teaching and learning materials.

The study aims to evaluate the use of Information and Communication Technology in the English modules offered to Higher Diploma students, and make recommendations for future development accordingly.

How will data be collected and analyzed

The data of this case study will be collected and analyzed through the following:
Questionnaire
Interview
Observation

Title
A study of students’ IT skills related to their reading ability.

Research Question
Explore students’ habit of using IT in their daily life.
How IT effect reading their reading ability?

Study participants
All primary 4 students in researcher’s school. (60 people)
They are selected because most of them have their own cell phone and they are able to use IT in their daily life. Also, their reading ability is still developing.

Why is this important topic to study?
I choose this topic because as we all know EDB is promoting to use IT to help in learning for these years, but some days ago, I read a news which shown only 24% of primary 4 students meet the basic Chinese reading skill requirement. The reason is students always use informal language to communicate with their friends using MSN or SMS. I just wonder is the technology helping for teaching?

Also, PowerPoint, graphic, animation are mostly used by teacher in their lesson. These IT tools usually don’t have many words but pictures. (a picture means thousand words) The picture definitely should help the students to know the concept of the topic easily, but they read less word and their language skill cannot be improved.

For the reasons above, I am planning for this research project since I believe that IT can help in teaching. The problem is how to use IT in teaching. I would like to find out this question in order to keep education in a correct direction.

How will data be collected and analyzed
I choose Chinese language to be exanimate subject since children are learning Chinese in lesson but they are using Cantonese in technology world. Also, these two languages are so similar. Students are easily to get confuse.

I select two class. Each class will use different teaching tools in their lesson. One will use IT graphic tools and the other use non graphic tools, for example blackboard.

In each class, the students will be separate into groups. One group is good at using informal language all the time, especially when they are using MSN and SMS. The other group can only use formal language.

The data this research will uses are the following:
Chinese term test result.
The speed of typing a Chinese speech.
Students will listen to a speech and they need to use MSN to
type the message in the speech. The time spend will be recorded.

Hi all,

I posted my ppt here days ago but I found that it takes quite a long time to wait for the ppt so I just post the text version here again.

Title
A Study of Using E-learning Platform in English Language Classrooms in Hong Kong Primary Schools

Research Question
Does the e-learning platform affect the English ability of primary school students?

Samples and Sampling Method
Two primary four classes of researcher’s school will be chosen. They are chosen since they will be taught by the same teacher in the coming school year. The students in these two classes have the best academic result in the form.

Why is this important topic to study?
- It allows the primary school teacher to make use of the effective methods in enhancing the English ability of students.
- Teachers can design or use the best teaching materials in their teaching of English
- It gives a direction to the other studies so that more representative researches and objectives results can be found in the future which help teaching and learning of English in primary schools.
- It gives ideas to the publishers or the suppliers in designing up-to-dated teaching materials in order to assist students’ learning in English.

How will data be collected and analyzed?
- An experimental design will be carried out.
- A pilot study will be carried out (Nov 2008) so problems can be found and amended.
- The study will be conducted from Jan to Jul.
- The result of first term English exam will be recorded as pre-test scores.
- Teacher use didactic teaching (chalk and talk) in class 4A and e-learning platform in class 4B to teach English in second term.
- The result of second term English exam will be recorded as post-test scores.
- T-test will be introduced to analyse the data collected.
- A grid will be used to record the data

Session 5 (Task 5)

Experimental Research Designs

Research Area:
To investigate the effect of the use L1 in English language classrooms in primary one

Possible Experimental Research Question:
Is the use of L1 in English language classrooms help primary one students achieving better scores in English Language?

Independent variable – the use of L1 (mother tongue of the children, that is, Cantonese)
Dependent variable – scores in English Language

This study is classified as an experimental design as the study try to test the effects of the independent variable on a dependable variable.

How could data for the variables be collected?
Step 1: Collect as many samples as possible. The children are divided into two groups. One will be the experimental group in which the independent variable (L1) is introduced and the other will be the control group, which will be taught by English.

Step 2: To investigate if the children perform better when L1 is used in English lessons, pre-test (mid-term exam) and post-test (annual exam) are introduced. It is assumed that the scores of the examination can measure the students’ performance in English Language.

Step 3: The experimental design would be-
Experimental condition
Pre-test (mid-term exam) scores Using L1 (Cantonese) in English Language classroom Post-test (annual exam) scores
Control condition
Pre-test (mid-term exam) scores Using L2 (English) in English Language classroom Post-test (annual exam) scores
Null hypothesis – there will be no significant differences between the scores

3. Provide argument how answer to that question can contribute to improvements in some aspect of education/teaching and learning?
It is assumed that some improvement in scores for both conditions (because children getting older) can be found, but if there is significant greater improvement in experimental condition, that meant this extra improvement is affected by the independent variable). The significant result helps the school to make decision on the medium of instruction used in primary 1 English Language classroom.

Task 4: Correlation Research Question

Potential correlation research questions:
• Correlation between the computer skill vs. academic result while using e-book to learn.

How data for the correlated variables could be collected:
• Measurement:
Assume the score of ICL assessment can measure a student’s performance in computer skills.

• Collect as many samples as possible. Graph can plot with the score of ICL assessment against the average mark of the subjects which use e-book in learning.

• Computation of correlation coefficients:
The 2 correlated variables [score of ICL assessment, average score of subjects which use e-book in learning] are used to compute the correlation coefficient for each grade. The closer the correlation coefficient to +1, the higher the strength of the relationship between 2 variables.

How answer to that question can contribute to improvements in some aspect of education/teaching and learning:
If positive correlation(>0.5) is found, school may has two choice:
1. Use original text book and blackboard in teacher.
2. Combine ICL lesson with the subjects which use e-book for learning. (to solve the immediate problem of computer skills in the lesson)

Session 1 (Task 1)

Discuss in your group and identify one research topic which you think it would be good idea to explore.

Research topic:-
The impact of using electronic books in English reading lessons in Hong Kong primary schools
(The purpose of the study is to ascertain the effect of using electronic books as compared to reading books in print in English reading lessons in Hong Kong primary school.)

Develop research question and classify it in one of the research types.
Research question:-
How do electronic books affect reading comprehension level of primary school students?

Research type:-
Quantitative research (Causal-comparative Research)
Independent variable – electronic books
Dependent variable – reading comprehension level

Research method:-
All participants are required to read same storybook in print and they should answer questions of reading test together to produce first reading scores. After one week, students will be divided into two groups. Group A students are asked to read another paperback storybooks by themselves while group B students will read the same book but in the form of electronic books. They are then asked to finish another reading test. The reading score of the two reading tests will be compared. The score obtain can show if there is significant relationship between the reading comprehension and the medium of pupils use in reading.

Present the outcome in your blog.
